that you don't know what you've got 'til its gone?
almost immediately after i woke up this morning, just as i was de-fogging with a little a.m. yoga, my day was completely interrupted by a power outage. after cursing and waiting a few moments, trying to will the power back on, i began realizing just how difficult my morning routine would be without the modern conveniences provided by electricity.
no coffee. no morning news. no digital clock. no toaster oven. no cordless phone. no blow dryer. no email. and worst - no hot water.
after leaning into a stream of frigid water, standing so as not to get my entire body wet, i managed to successfully shampoo and rinse my hair. (due to certain risk of hypothermia, i chose to forgo the conditioner.) i towel-dried, mosturized, deodorized, brushed, dressed, and braided - all by candlelight, no less - and thought about how much easier it would be if the damned electricity would come on.
its amazing how dependent we've become on technology. nearly everything i do during the course of my day has been made easier, or even made possible, by inventions and advancements that we take entirely for granted. now, i have no desire to move to walden pond and live deliberately without my cell phone and microwave. but i do think we all need a to be reminded every so often of how integrated technology has become with even the simplest of our actions... so that it may enhance our lives, not determine them. 5:54 PM //
