the priorities of a four-year-old

i got rear-ended today. i was stopped, waiting for a line of cars to pass by, when my car got slammed by an old man in a yukon. i've never been in an accident, so even though it wasn't that bad, it was pretty nerve-wracking. we both pulled over, and after i checked quickly to make sure tara was ok, i got out of the car to survey the damage.

after talking with the other driver, i went back to my car to wait for the police. i opened the back door and poor tara was bawling. tears were streaming down her face, making little rivers through the white dust of the powdered donut she had been eating. i sat down and tried to console her, assuring her that nobody was hurt and that we would be able to leave soon. she didn't stop crying, so i asked her what was bothering her. she looked up at me with her soggy face and her welled-up eyes and said:

"i dropped my donut!"

she didn't even realize there had been an accident, and hadn't noticed that i was outside talking to a bunch of strangers. her only concern was that her half-eaten donut was lying on the car floor.
