feeling oh-so-cultured

i just went to a poetry reading by jackie kay. if you've never heard of her, she's a very interesting personality and i'd suggest looking her up. she is the child of a nigerian father and scottish mother who was later adopted and raised in by a white couple in scotland. it goes without saying that she's viewed the world from a pretty unique perspective. oh - and in addition to a poet, she's also a novelist, playwright, biographer, and writer of short stories.

although i'd read a bit of her poetry to prepare myself for the reading, i wasn't particularly sold on it. however, there is something about the spoken word which just made her work come to life. poetry is interesting that way - there's so much room for interpretation, and sometimes you can get lost. however, hearing it spoken by the author animates it with so much depth and passion.

i have to say that this is definitely the best part of college for me... the constant exposure to the new and interesting. i can't claim to always be excited about homework and studying, but i don't think i could ever get tired of learning new things and being exposed to new ways of understanding.
