nature is truly amazing
ok, so i've spent the past few months bitching about the weather. over christmas break, there were the two snowstorms that brought 18 inches each to my doorstep. i admit there was something of a novelty in getting that much snow all at once (at least the first time... by the second storm, the amusement was dying off quickly) but it certainly filled my snow quota for the season. however, mother nature or jack frost or whoever the hell is in charge of these kinds of matters clearly did not get my memo, and the snow has just kept on a' coming. and then, this aforementioned decision-maker decided it would be fun to throw some ice and other nasties into the mix. now i know i didn't approve that plan. and as a result, driving has been gross, my driveway is a death trap, i need an ice pick to open my mailbox, i spent the entirety of sunday night alone in the dark without power, and it took me about a half hour to regain feeling in my hands as i drove to work because it was -12 degrees at 7:00 this morning.
but then i had some sort of nature-appreciation epiphany. picture this: i'm taking my usual route to work, which consists of mostly back roads in order to avoid traffic. i'm cruising along, enjoying some dave matthews band, when i come around this bend in the road. all of a sudden the sun is square in the middle of my windshield, and i'm frantically searching for sunglasses before i lose all function in my retinas. once i can see again, i take a look around me and i'm totally breathless. i am suddenly driving through this perfect little crystal forest. all of the trees are encased in ice and the sun is illuminating them in this truly magical way. i'm not sure i've ever seen anything so fantastic. i'm not sure if this was total compensation for all of the weather-related inconveniences, but its sure as hell one good down payment.
have fun out there, kids. or as my indian (dots, not feathers) professor would say, "let the good times be rolling!"
